Visual/tactile maps andĀ models can be great for teaching various skills. This is a modelĀ I specifically designed for teaching about crosswalks. The final product also resembles a railroad track so I guess I got lucky and got a two for one deal!
I plan on introducing this crosswalk model to my student who tends to wait at corners too long and misses safe crossing opportunities. After the student becomes familiar with the design I plan to have him hold the toy person and I will move the toy cars near or away from the crosswalk. When they are near I will make car noises too. This may not be necessary for some students, but some might benefit from the additional help. When the cars are away and it is “safe to cross” or “all quiet” I will ask the student to move the toy person across the sidewalk.
This is just one of countless possibilities!
